I've been rereading the Twilight books this past week (thank you Brooke and Tara.) They are fun books, and I have to admit, this second time around I think I like them a little more than the first time. I still think Bella is neurotic and selfish and histrionic, but hey, the book is for young-adults, right? And she's a teenager, so it works. As I read the books I can never quite let that fact go, though so it's sort of a distraction for me. This second time around, in Eclipse I still think that part of Bella's character is too unrealistic (yes even compared to the whole plot line of vampires, werewolves, etc.) She is so willing to leave everything behind and become a vampire, yet she has major issues with the idea of marriage, so much so that she barely reconciles herself to the idea before the end of the book. Actually, I remember that at first when I finished the book I thought that Bella's switch from wanting Edward and no marriage to actually wanting the marriage (to some extent) and wanting to wait very unrealistic. This second time around, perhaps because I already knew the plot so I wasn't so distracted, I realize that Bella was actually finally not being so selfish, and she finally had her reasoning straight. I especially liked the part where she said that she would not compromise Edward's soul; it was too important to her. That had always been Edwards line so it was nice to see that perhaps some of Edward's selflessness was rubbing off. I do think Edward is still too understanding and forgiving of Bella, but perhaps that's what comes with over 100 years of learning patience.
